Oba (kurgan burial mounds)

Oba (kurgan mound)

Oba (kurgan mound) are hill-shaped burial places of the important historical figures in the Eurasian nomadic tradition. First appearing in the Bronze Age, by the Early Iron Age this phenomenon became fully-formed architectural feature of the Great Steppe. Eurasian nomadic peoples built small and large kurgans in different territories from Northern China to Eastern Europe. The kurgans were specifically engineered to stand tall for millennia as “eternal” monuments of the departed to the “other world”.
